What the site stores
- Your swats. Each swat goes to the wall as the insect, what you used on it, the lag, how far it missed by, whether it hit, and how long you waited before it. Nothing else.
- Your daily results. A date and a score out of twenty, with the insect and lag of that day's round.
- Your rounds. A note when a round starts and another when it ends, so the two can be matched. Each has the date, the insect, what you had in hand, and whether it was the daily. The start also says which version of the page you were playing. The end adds the score, how many swats you took, how many of the hits were a trap's catches past what it cost, whether the round ended on twenty swats or on the clock, and whether it was played on the website, in the Android app or in the iPhone app, and the country it was saved from. Cloudflare works out the country from your network address as the round arrives; the site keeps the country only, not the address.
- An opaque id, made up in your browser and kept there, so your later swats update your earlier ones rather than pile up. It is not tied to you and cannot be traced back to you. "Forget my swats" on the page clears it. The wall keeps the numbers already sent.
- A count of page opens per day, made from the request your browser already sent. A date, the kind of link it came by (a plain visit, a challenge, a daily, or a link tagged for where it was posted), and an integer. No address, no browser details, no referrer. The iPhone app carries its page inside it, so there is no request to count, and the app sends one short note each time it opens instead. It is counted the same way: a date, "the iPhone app", and an integer.
In the iPhone app
The app is this page, with a few things only a phone can do. It saves to the site the same way, so everything above applies to it too. On top of that:
- A second copy of your record, on your phone. iOS can clear a web page's storage when a phone runs low on space. So the app also keeps your swats, your daily results, your id and anything not yet sent in its own storage, and puts them back if iOS clears them. The copy stays on the phone, and "Forget my swats" clears your swats and your id from it too.
- Achievements. For Game Center's achievements, the app keeps a few counts on your phone: your hits and each trap's catches over all your rounds, your longest daily streak, which insects you have hit and with which swing, and which achievements you have earned. If you are signed in to Game Center, the app tells it which achievements you have earned and how far along you are. Game Center is Apple's, and Apple's privacy policy covers it. The app never reads your Game Center name or id, and never sends them anywhere.
- A reminder, if you ask for one. After a daily, the app offers to remind you the next day. If you say yes, it keeps the time of day on your phone and schedules the reminders there. Turning them off forgets the time.
What Cloudflare counts
The page runs Cloudflare Web Analytics, a visitor count that Cloudflare keeps for the site. It notes each page view with the page, the site that sent you there, your country, the kind of browser and device, and how fast the page loaded. The site sees totals, not visitors. This is separate from the site's own count of page opens above, which keeps none of these. Cloudflare says it keeps nothing in your browser to do this, no cookies and no local storage, and that it does not fingerprint individuals by network address, browser details or any other data.
What it does not do
- No cookies. No advertising. No names, no email, no account.
- The page loads one thing from anyone else: Cloudflare's visitor count, above. The font and everything else come from this site.
- A challenge link carries a first name if you type one. It lives in the link only and is never sent to the site's storage.
- A short-lived, hashed form of your network address is used only to limit how often one visitor can save, and is not kept.
Where it lives
The site runs on Cloudflare Pages with a Cloudflare D1 database, in Cloudflare's data centres. Cloudflare's own handling of requests is described in its privacy policy.
